Q: Didn't KC and the Sunshine Band put out a live CD in the '90s? Why didn't you review it?
A: When I started this review section, I decided only to spotlight albums with new material and Greatest Hits packages. The band did release a live CD in the '90s that features live versions of previously released songs; however, it is now out of print.
Q: Where's the German (Egyptian, Japanese, Neptunian) Greatest Hits release?
A: I only collect international greatest hits collections which contain songs that normally aren't available on CD in the United States. For example, the Dutch greatest hits has two album cuts from "Who Do Ya (Love)" that aren't available anywhere else on CD. There is a Japanese greatest hits that doesn't have anything different; that's why you don't find those releases here.
Q: Why are you not including the "And More" songs on "KCSB and More" and "Part 3 and More?"
A: For the '70s original releases, I decided to review the albums rather than the CDs. Therefore, the extra cuts aren't included. I may add a page with the And More songs later.
Q: What are "The Biggies" you keep referring to?
A: No KCSB greatest hits cd is complete without the five pop Number 1 hits "Get Down Tonight," "That's The Way I Like It," "Shake Your Booty," "I'm Your Boogie Man" and "Please Don't Go;" the R&B Number 1 hit "Keep It Comin' Love," and the Saturday Night Fever track "Boogie Shoes." These are "The Biggies." (Note: "Give It Up" was a Number 1 hit in the UK, but because of licensing problems is not always found on US cds).
Q: How can I purchase "I'll Be There For You?"
A: Just click here!
Q: Why were the lyrics so repetitive?
A: This question is so often asked, and so controversial among KC fans, that I created a separate page just to address it here.
Q: Did the musicians on the '70s records tour with the band in the '70s?
A: I believe the core musicians (Harry Casey, Richard Finch, Robert Johnson, Fermin Goytisolo, and Jerome Smith) both played on the records and toured with the band; I also believe the background singers (Beverly Champion Foster, Jeannette Williams, and Margaret Reynolds) both sang on the records and toured. I think the horn players on tour did not play on the records. If anyone at KC headquarters knows, please fill me in!
Q: Are any of the musicians on any of the records still touring with the band?
A: Only KC and percussionist Fermin Goytisolo still tour with the band. The others are younger musicians, but are no less talented.
Q: What's that high-pitched instrument at the beginning of "Get Down Tonight?"
A: A speeded-up guitar track.
Q: Didn't KC and the Sunshine Band record "Play That Funky Music?"
A: No, that 1976 hit was by a band from Jefferson County, Ohio (where both my parents grew up), called Wild Cherry.
Q: Doesn't that Goldmember song from the 2002 Austin Powers movie use KCSB themes?
A. Yes. The song "Hey Goldmember," sung in character by Beyonce Knowles as Foxxy Cleopatra, contains melodies from "Get Down Tonight," "That's the Way I Like It," and "Shake Your Booty" with new words appropriate for the movie. It's notable that the song plays almost interrupted and without much spoken dialogue over it.
Q: Was that really KC in the movie "The In-Laws?"
A: Yes, KC and several members of the Sunshine Band appeared as themselves in the 2003 Michael Douglas-Albert Brooks movie "The In-Laws." They sang "Get Down Tonight" at the rehearsal dinner for the wedding. Hey Chicagoans, see if you can tell which "Chicago" scenes were actually filmed in Canada.
Q: What is the difference between "drums" and "percussion?"
A: In general, "drums" is the classic drum set; "percussion" is any number of Latin and African percussion instruments including bongos, conga drums, timbales, maracas and chimes. Ringo played "drums;" Sunny Ortiz plays "percussion." IMHO, it's the percussion that really adds color and excitement to KCSB music. Contrary to popular belief, both are "real" drums and both are very hard to play, so give the drummer and percussionist a big hand when you see them.
Q: What is KC's favorite flower/breed of dog/food/color...?
A: How the heck would I know?
Q: What is Richard Finch doing these days?
A: Looking for thistle seeds??? (in Pee-Wee Herman voice) I DON'T KNOW!
Q: Didn't George McCrae die a few years back?
A: No! His death was falsely reported. He is, at this writing, alive and well and living in the Netherlands. How 'bout a tour, George?
Q: Is singer/poet Henry Rollins KC's son?
A: No. This rumor has been circulating around the Net for years, probably because KC and Rollins bear a slight facial resemblance, especially around the eyes. KC was born on January 31, 1951, in Hialeah, Florida. Henry Rollins was born on February 13, 1961, in Washington, DC. Unless KC was a very precocious nine-year-old, he could not possibly be the father of someone born in 1961. Hey, maybe they'll team up for a duet!
Q: Becky, what are your favorite and least favorite KCSB songs?
A: My ten favorite KC and the Sunshine Band songs, with original albums, are:
1. "I'm Your Boogie Man" (Part 3)
2. "Shotgun Shuffle" (Sound of Sunshine)
3. "Get Up Off Your Love" (I'll Be There For You)
4. "I Like to Do It" (Part 3)
5. "Shake Your Booty" (Part 3)
6. "Let's Go Party" (Part 3)
7. "I Will Love You Tomorrow" (Who Do Ya Love)
8. "That's The Way I Like It" (KC and the SB)
9. "Come To My Island" (Who Do Ya Love)
10. "Do You Feel Allright" (Who Do Ya Love)
I also should cite "Dance Across The Floor" by Jimmy "Bo" Horne, a Sunshine Band track with a different singer. It's one of the best Casey-Finch productions I've ever heard.
As for least favorites, one would have to be "Give It Up" (All in a Night's Work/KC Ten) mostly due to bad associations from the time period when it was popular; I also don't really like "I Get Lifted" and "What Makes You Happy." (Both from KC and the SB). You might like them, though.
Q: Becky, why did you choose to do KC and the Sunshine Band reviews in the first place?
A:Because I think this music deserves to be taken seriously, and I don't think anyone else has really taken an in-depth look at it. And that's the way I like it?
